IB Chemistry Introduction

IB Chemistry is a very rigorous course, it is one of the most interesting subjects in the IB program so it is very important that students meet the entry requirements in order to be successful. To start with, students should have basic math skills as well as having high grades in science, chemistry or in science double award. The theoretical side of IB Chemistry

The theoretical side of IB Chemistry

At this stage, students are expected to finish 40 hours of practical work if they are Standard Level Students and 60 hours of practical work if they are Higher Level Students. Generally, the question can be anything as long as it is related to chemistry and their studies. Students can investigate their questions by firstly having a plan for the question. Secondly, students should plan for the investigation, the methodology and then do a research around the background of their question. Once students have done all the previous steps, they will carry it out in the laboratory. The process normally takes around 10 hours. After that, students will analyze these results, conclude and evaluate their findings. In a nutshell, these are building on the inquiry skills that our IB chemistry tutors have taught them at MYP. It will account for 20% of their final grade.

The external and internal assessments

Students are assessed based on three papers whether they are Standard Level Students or Higher Level Students. The higher level Students have papers that are longer than the SL students. The HL papers are worth more marks because the students at this level are studying more units. However, the structure is the same and both HL students and SL students will do a multiple choice questions paper on the whole of the core content. Moreover, the second paper is short answer questions and some extended response questions on the same core topics, however, additional topics are added to HL students. To sum up, the first and second paper will assess eleven topics if the students are SL and will assess twenty-one topics if the students are HL.

The third paper is their option paper in which students are required to study one option unit. The first fifteen marks of this paper will be data response questions and practical-based questions. These are skill-based questions from the skills our IB chemistry home tutors have been developing throughout the course. Finally, the last 20% of the weighting of the final grade is given to their IA coursework.
